The fabric is diaphanous so highly unlikely it was a working hanky! FEATURES: The centre has a map of Australia, with states and territories marked. The corners have illustrations of Olympic stadium, swimming pool, Olympic village and Olympic Park (according to City Collection|City of Melbourne. The perimeter has various athletes. BACKGROUND: Beset by late government funding, political boycotts and a punch up, the 1956 games marked some Olympic firsts, including a new tradition of all teams walking together in the closing ceremony.
